The Origins of Mindfulness

Hinduism • Hinduism is regarded as the oldest of the world’s religions and it holds at its core principles that are identical with mindfulness.

Buddhism • Buddhism grew from the teachings of Hinduism but has a unique philosophy and insight that holds mindfulness as a vital life skill.

Yoga • Yoga has roots in Hinduism, but it is a form of secular spirituality that has become very popular in the West, bringing with it the central principle of mindfulness or bringing you back to awareness.

Stoicism • Stoicism is a philosophy that originated in Greece and Rome. At its centre it holds the idea of “prosoché”, which translates roughly as “attention”.

Thich Nhat Hanh • The Vietnamese monk who Dr Martin Luther King called “an apostle of peace and non-violence” has also been called “the father of mindfulness”.

Jon Kabat-Zinn • Jon Kabat-Zinn is a molecular biologist renowned as a researcher, writer and meditation teacher. He is credited with bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine.

Mindfulness meets science • Philosophers and religions have espoused mindfulness for millennia and now science is verifying that it does have a range of beneficial effects.

The monkey mind • The “monkey mind” is a Buddhist principle that refers to the tendency of the mind to jump from thought to thought. It is a phenomenon recognised in the Yoga Sutras and both religious streams emphasise that the monkey mind is not “you”, but that “you” can be found in the stillness that mindfulness provides.

What will mindfulness be like? • Mindfulness does not change the inner you, but it allows you to access you. It allows you to be a witness, to see things as they are, and meet all that you experience honestly and with acceptance.
